Each ICMI Study addresses an issue or topic of particular significance in contemporary mathematical education, and is conducted by an international team of leading scholars and practitioners in that domain appointed by the Executive Committee of ICMI. Each ICMI Study has an international conference associated with it. Beyond the productive interaction and collaborations occasioned by this event, the main product is a Study volume, which aims to offer a coherent, state-of-the-art representation of the domain of the Study. It is these Study volumes that constitute the New ICMI Study Series (NISS).

Pakistan has historically supported US foreign policy, specifically during the United States’ opening to China and following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. For its part, the United States has striven to lessen tensions between Pakistan and India. Although, relations between the US and Pakistan remain somewhat unsettled over regional geopolitical complexities. The bilateral thrust in the US-Pakistan ties remained missing for decades. With the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and subsequent lesser burden of geo-politics both the countries are trying to reset their ties.

Our annual meeting’s location in Montreal presents the perfect opportunity to put some pressure on the meaning of solidarity across a number of communities, modes of engagement, and national boundaries. We invite our colleagues in Canada and the Americas, writ large, as well as those beyond to join us as we think through these engagements. We want to actively participate in building a practice (of love, of solidarity, of justice) in the space of contestation and radical difference.
